There is a particular quality to cloth made in Hassan that is difficult to explain until you've held it. The weave is close but not stiff, the hand is smooth without feeling synthetic, and the weight — somewhere between a summer shirting and a proper suiting — sits in a register most fabrics never reach. Hassan Silk Cotton No. 09 is that cloth at its most considered.
The blend here is silk and cotton in careful proportion. The cotton provides the structure: it breathes, it holds its shape through a long day, and it softens gradually with each wash rather than wearing out. The silk does something more subtle — it lends a quiet drape that cotton alone cannot achieve, a slight give when the fabric moves, and a faint natural lustre that catches light only when the cloth is in motion. Photographed flat, it looks like a fine shirting. Worn, it reads as something considerably more.
The pattern is a pin stripe — narrow, restrained, woven into the cloth rather than printed onto it. The lines run true and close, giving the fabric a sense of direction without announcing itself. In Midnight, the ground is a deep blue-black and the stripe is barely lighter — more a shadow than a line. In Tobacco, the same stripe reads as warmth. In Forest, it disappears almost entirely into the green, surfacing only when the light catches it at an angle. Each colourway is the same cloth, but a different temperament.
This fabric works across a range of garments. Cut into a shirt, it drapes open at the collar with an ease that cotton poplin cannot match. As trousers, the weight gives a clean break at the hem and holds a crease through most of the day. A kurta in this cloth falls with particular grace — the silk content allowing the fabric to move with the body rather than against it. A sherwani in Midnight or Burgundy, lined properly, would hold its own at any occasion that calls for one.
At 1,240 rupees per metre, this is not an everyday cloth — but it is not priced for a single wearing either. It is the kind of fabric that, made up well and cared for properly, becomes the garment you reach for first.

Care instructions
Care instructions
Silk cotton is a fabric that rewards patience. It does not need frequent washing — airing it out after wear is usually enough. When it does need cleaning, hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent and handle it lightly; never wring or twist. Lay it flat or drape it over a rod to dry in shade, away from direct sun, which can dull both the colour and the natural sheen over time.
Press on a low-to-medium heat setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. The silk content is sensitive to high heat and steam at close range, so keep the iron moving and avoid lingering. A pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric adds an extra measure of safety, especially on darker colours like Midnight or Burgundy, where heat marks show more readily.
Dry cleaning is safe if you prefer it, and recommended for the first wash to help the fabric settle. Store folded or hanging in a breathable cloth bag — avoid plastic covers, which trap moisture and can weaken the silk fibres over time.
Treat it well and it will develop a quiet patina that no new cloth has.
